At our homepage, as well as in the search box on the right of each screen, you can search the content of the Culture and Recreation Portal website as well as the content of all the websites we index - that is, more than 3,350,000 web screens of Australian cultural and recreation information.
There is an advanced search that enables you to search by category or sub-category, and/or audience type, and/or location by state and capital city or other location in the State. Use the Search help for more information.
Searching for a particular website
If you are looking for a particular Australian cultural website, type in the name of the organisation or an abbreviation. If we have the site listed, the link to the website and a description of the site will be returned on a results screen.
For example, you can find the National Gallery website by typing in NGA, nga, national gallery of australia, or National Gallery of Australia.
If you don't know the correct complete name of the organisation, you are better off using a single keyword - like gallery or museum - and getting a list of all the websites with that word in the title.
Searching for visitor information for an organisation whose website is in the Portal
If the organisation's website is listed (see above), then go directly to their site to find the details you need.
If the organisation's website is indexed, it may be possible to access this information by entering "contact" or "opening hours" in the search box on the homepage and selecting the topic or type of organisation. For example entering "contact" and "Galleries" will locate the Canberra Museum and Gallery contact details, amongst a list of other gallery websites. Our search help area has more detail on refining searches from the homepage of this portal.
Searching for information about some particular issue or idea
The Culture and Recreation Portal website indexes the content of more than 4,200 Australian websites.
You can use a single keyword, or for more tightly focused searches, you can use a search string. To get the most out of your search activities, visit our Search Help screen.
At the Australian Stories screen there are links to articles on specific topics about Australian history and culture. Each article provides an overview with links to additional relevant information.

Using the browse lists on the homepage
The homepage and Australian cultural websites screen have browsable lists of websites selected by category or audience or location.
Only one selection at a time can be made from these lists, i.e. select one category or one location or one audience type. When you click on a category or location or audience, you will be taken straight to a list of websites fitting the category, in the state, or aimed at the selected audience. You can then select a website to visit or refine your search.
