December - journeys home

The journey to Bethlehem for the birth of Jesus Christ, celebrated as Christmas, reflects on a journey home as well as discovery.

This month, the 'journey home' is an exploration of the Indigenous Australian architecture influenced by both social organisation and change as well as locally available materials (including stone) to build long-lasting dome-framed structures.

The sense of arriving home and 'sitting down country' at Christmas time allows us time to reflect on the significance of rocks and water - whether this might be in the vicinity of paperbark-lined ochre-decorated huts or on stilt platforms catching a breeze.

Water is an increasingly precious resource in a sunburnt country. This, and the joy and desire for both, can be seen across many of the events in December as are the journeys home.
