Connecting you with Australian culture online

Guide 1. What's in it for me?

What can you or your organisation do with the Internet? (screen 4 of 5)

Lots. Even the smallest, perhaps especially the smallest, cultural organisation can benefit substantially from the Internet.

Use the Internet to let people know what you do. Increasingly, people wanting a cultural experience will start their search for it on the Internet.

  • Use your website to let people know when you are open, what facilities you have, and any special things that you do.
  • Provide them with enticing information about your exhibits.
  • Show them some of your exhibits.
  • Find out from survey forms what they like or don't like.
  • Sell tickets.
  • Sell related merchandise.
  • Advertise staff vacancies.
  • Provide educational information about an exhibit.
  • Create an electronic magazine.
  • Send and receive electronic mail.
  • Carry out research and use it to enhance your organisation.
  • Maintain membership lists.
  • Expand to reach new audiences.
  • Create new services.

These are just a few of the things that a cultural organisation or cultural worker can do once they are connected.

What do other people or organisations do with the Internet?

Why not take a look at some websites? Regardless of the nature of the site, look at it critically and think about what parts of that site might work for you or your organisation.

Hundreds of Australian cultural organisations with websites can be found directly by using our GAustralian cultural search engine(1).

Ask yourself this...

Now that you have had an introduction to the Internet, and looked at some websites, ask yourself the following questions about the websites you have visited.

  • Which website was useful?
  • Which website was stimulating?
  • Which website would you want to visit again?
  • Why would you want to visit that website again?
  • What could you do with a website for your organisation?
  • How does the use of the Internet by other organisations affect you or your organisation?
  • Against the costs of developing an Internet presence, what are the costs to your organisation or yourself of not developing an Internet presence?

In the next screen, you can have a look at our 'Getting on the Net' checklist.
