Guide 1. What's in it for me?

'Getting on the Net' checklist and review of Guide 1 (screen 5 of 5)

Before you read this checklist, there's a point which needs to be made - access to the Internet and creation of a website for your organisation are no longer optional extras.

They have to be considered as an essential part of your business development strategy(1). Users now expect organisations to have websites which provide information about the organisation and its activities. If you don't, you are losing opportunities to increase your business.

There are ongoing costs, but there are ongoing benefits and these benefits, in the longer term, are likely to outweigh your initial setup costs.

What are the benefits?

• Additional sales.
• Wider potential market, not limited by geography.
• Better communication with your audience.
• Better communication with suppliers.
• Development of a sense of community around your organisation and its activities.
• A Internet presence alongside hundreds of other Australian cultural organisations.
• A branding opportunity.
• An opportunity to keep up-to-date with the latest in your field and exchange information with peers and colleagues.

If you or your organisation want to get on the Internet, you will need the following:

• A computer (or access to one) with sufficient RAM and sufficient hard disk space to run and store browser software.
• An Internet connection.
• Browser software like Microsoft Internet Explorer(2) or Netscape Navigator(3).
• Server software(4).
• A modem(5) or a computer with an internal modem.
• An Internet account with an Internet Service Provider(6).
• HTML skills(7) and/or time to learn them or a budget to buy them in.
• An HTML editor(8).
• An FTP(9) program.
• A budget structured to support the ongoing costs of the ISP connection, updating and maintenance of the website, upgrading of computer software and hardware.

And remember the Internet is a fun, vital, exciting place of enormous resources. Enjoy it!
