Connecting you with Australian culture online
Funding is necessary if you want to establish a website. But where do you get it?
There is little direct funding support for the development of your cultural website. There may be assistance available for professional development to enable a member of staff to develop some Web skills or the possibility of applying to upgrade your computer. You will need to explore the range of funding options that may be available through federal, state, or local government organisations.
A good place to seek out these options is in the 'Cultural Sector Grants and Services Finder ' area of the
Culture and Recreation Portal (1).
For example,
visualarts.net.au(2) provides funds for NSW visual artists to market or promote their work. This may include costs of advertising an exhibition, compiling a portfolio, or launching a website.
In 1997, the
Australian Network for Art and Technology(3) ran an intensive skilling program for artists in new media technologies. In 1998 they ran LOGIN - ANAT to develop a series of residencies for emerging visual artists to develop Web-based projects.
But organisations that want to develop websites may need to look at business development funding, or audience development funding.
In reality the development and maintenance of your organisation's website must be included in your business plan(4).
If you are using this Guide online, don't forget you can order a paper version from our download section(5) which you can use away from your computer. The only disadvantage of this is that you will not be able to follow the links as you read about them.
If you are reading this as a printed version, you may want to use the online version too. You will find it useful to follow the links and get more information about each of the topic areas. You will also learn a lot about website design, development and functionality as you look at the large number of resources which are linked to from this set of Guides.
The more websites you look at, the better will be your appreciation of this exciting and expanding medium, and the better will be any website you develop.
