Finding discussion lists

There are plenty of places on the Internet which have lists of discussion lists. You can try GLiszt(1), or our list of Gsome cultural discussion lists(2).

Subscribing to discussion lists

Once you have found a distribution and discussion list on a topic that interests you, subscribing usually is a matter of sending an email to the list.

Often all you need do to join is put the word 'subscribe' as the only text in the subject field or body of a message to the list server. Some also provide a simple Web form for you to use to subscribe instead of an email message.

There is no cost in subscribing to or belonging to a distribution or discussion list.

The first message that returns to you from the server tells you about your options as a subscriber, and gives details about unsubscribing. Read it carefully.

Save this message. Save this message (this is so important it should be stated twice!). You will need it to unsubscribe, or change your options as a subscriber.

While unsubscribing is easy, you will need to follow the procedure outlined in this first message you receive from the discussion list.

Managing mail you receive from discussion lists

One of the problems of joining a discussion list is the large number of emails you can receive - how many depends on the number of people on the list and how active they are.

If you do receive a lot of emails from the discussion list it can make it difficult for you to pick out your personal email items from the rest.

This is one reason why you might choose to have good email software(3) which sorts your mail for you.

With most discussion lists you can elect to receive a digest of the postings, rather than receive each as a separate mail item. A digest means you receive one email message containing all postings of that day or for a particular period. So you get one long message rather than many short ones. This can make your email easier to manage.
