Guide 3. What can I do on the Internet?

Review of Guide 3 (screen 20 of 20)

This final screen is a quick review of this Guide, which explained the various components of the Internet.

You learnt about the Web, which is the reason for the recent explosive growth of the Internet. You learnt what Web screens are, what can go on them, and how the Web works.

You also learnt about the other principal elements of the Internet: email, file exchange (FTP), newsgroups, distribution and discussion lists, and live communications. This last element includes a range of real time interactions on the Net and electronic commerce.

Each of these elements can be of use to cultural workers and cultural organisations, and almost certainly will have an impact on you in the next few years.

Ask yourself this...

  • Which of the Internet elements could I use?
  • Should I introduce them all at once, or gradually?
  • Which of my existing services could I provide more efficiently online?
  • What new services could I deliver online?
  • How would I develop and maintain these services?
  • What reorganising or restructuring do I need to do to make the transition to an Internet presence?
